Take Me To The D&R Canal

The Delaware & Raritan canal is a 70 mile park that provides ample opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to bike, run, walk, canoe, and fish.  The main path runs through the following landmarks: US 1, Port Mercer, Alexander, Washington, Harrison, Millstone, Kingston, Rocky Hill, Griggstown, Blackwells, Amwell, Weston, Zarepath, 10 Mile Lock, South Bound Brook, Five Mile Lock, Demott, and Landing Lane.  The access points closest to Princeton and Carnegie Lake include Alexander Road, Washington Street, and Harrison Street.

Because the canal was used for commerce during the early nineteenth century, the path that runs along side the canal is nice and flat and offers an ideal surface for running, walking and biking.  After all, mules used to use this path to pull boats along the canal.  On warm weekend afternoons you'll find that the paths can be quite busy with runners and bicyclists.  You can rent canoes in Griggstown and Princeton to travel parts of the canal by water.  Alternatively, you can bring your own boat or Kayak and launch it a one of the many access points along the canal.

You can fish along the entire canal, where you might find trout, bass, sunfish, catfish, perch and pickerel.  Make sure you have a New Jersey Fishing License.  Posted 11/1/08.
